Upper Key Stage 2 Computational Thinking and Creativity
Spreadsheets and Databases

The Premier League and Women’s Super League need your help! Analyse their spreadsheets on team and individual performances and then create one to track and analyse your own performance. Can you develop a fantasy football database then select your own ‘fantasy team’ to compete in your in-house league?

Session 1 Spreadsheets in sport

Objectives

Computing

  • Use Excel to analyse, evaluate and present data and information.
  • Be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of ICT.
  • Evaluate and apply IT, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.

Maths

  • Complete, read and interpret information in tables.
  • Construct pie charts and line graphs; use simple formulae.

Lesson Planning

The Premier and Super Leagues want you to explore their performance tracking spreadsheets. Understand why and how formulae are created, and manipulate the data to represent it graphically for each sporting league.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To explore, analyse and manipulate sports data spreadsheets, suggesting why the information is useful and presenting it in different ways.
  • To use and create simple formulae for spreadsheets; manipulate a sports data spreadsheet to create graphic representations.

Children will:

  • Explore football data spreadsheets and suggest why the information is useful.
  • Learn how to create formulas for spreadsheets.
  • Manipulate a football spreadsheet to create simple graphic representations.

You Will Need

You do not need any particular resources for this session.

Session 2 Create your own sports performance spreadsheet

Objectives

  • Use simple formulae.

PE

  • Compare performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Lesson Planning

Are you the next big thing in football? Develop and create a personal spreadsheet to record and track your running performance in PE.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To create a spreadsheet to track and demonstrate sports performance.
  • To create spreadsheet formulae to track sports performance.
  • To record current running performance and set goals for improving this.

Children will:

  • Create a spreadsheet to track and demonstrate improvement in PE performance.
  • Develop formulae to help track performance.
  • Begin to compare personal performances.

Provided Resources

  • Instructions for setting up an Excel spreadsheet
  • Excel formatting skills cards

You Will Need

  • Outdoor running space marked out
  • Stopwatch

Session 3 Design your own fantasy team sports database

Objectives

Computing

  • Select, use and combine database software to design and create content that accomplishes given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information.
  • Be responsible, competent, confident and creative users of ICT.
  • Evaluate and apply IT, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.

Maths

  • Complete, read and interpret information in tables.

Lesson Planning

You have been challenged to set up your own database of top footballer performers to help create your own fantasy football team.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To look at the form a database takes and identify its key purposes and create a database using 2Investigate Online or Softease software.
  • To identify key data fields for a database from scrutinising tables of information.

Children will:

  • Explore a sports database and identify how it differs from a spreadsheets.
  • Explore online data tables and suggest key data fields for a database based on this.
  • Create their own database using 2Investigate Online or Softease.

You Will Need

You do not need any particular resources for this session.

Session 4 Choose your team

Objectives

Add in your performance data on football players to your new database. Try it out and select your own fantasy ‘team’ to follow. Will your team win the league? Can you now share all of your data in sports know-how in a ‘masterclass’ for your friends?

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To enter data accurately and use the functions of a database.
  • To scrutinise data on a database to select high calibre fantasy footballers.

Children will:

  • Manipulate data in their database to identify footballers for their team.
  • Enter data on their database and check for accuracy.
  • ‘Ask’ their database questions to manipulate the information and identify potential ‘fantasy league’ players.
  • Share new computing skills with others in the form of a ‘data in sports masterclass’.
