PyGirls: free Python courses for girls aged 12-19

By Hamilton Brookes - 12 Aug 2024

Despite making up half the population, women are still drastically underrepresented in STEM, making up under 25 percent of the tech workforce. This under-representation is rooted in the lack of equal opportunity for young girls to gain an early interest in STEM.

What is PyGirls?

Hamilton Brookes are proud social impact partners with PyGirls!

We support us the intiative by promoting PyGirls courses in our extensive network of schools, teachers, students, and social organizations to encourage girls to discover STEM through coding.

PyGirls is an initiative which provides free Python classes in English and German for young girls. The programme is aimed at girls aged 12-19 who want to develop their coding skills. Crucially, it allows girls to have great experiences with technology surrounded by other girls doing the same thing - reimagining stereotypes and building confidence in young girls in STEM.

What does the programme entail?

  • PyGirls is an extracurricular activity for 12 to 19 year-old girls
  • It is a 1-hour weekly course on Zoom, with ~ 5 PyGirls per trainer
  • Participants learn to code in Python following a fun curriculum based on games, to develop their interest in STEM and their self-confidence
  • Participants receive a certificate at the completion of each level
  • PyGirls is 100 percent FREE
  • PyGirls progress steadily with 8 week courses offered 3 times per year in Autumn, Winter and Spring.
  • No pressure: Sessions do not need to be taken consecutively!
