Upper Key Stage 2 Earliest Civilisations: Ancient Egyptians
Ancient Egyptian Tombs

This is a challenging but very rewarding Design and Technology project. Learn about the tombs of the Egyptians and how to draw and paint Ancient Egyptian style figures. Then make and decorate your own 3D model of an Ancient Egyptian decorated rock-cut tomb.

Session 1 Prepare card pieces

Objectives

History

  • Know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world: the nature of ancient civilisations.
  • Characteristic features of past non-European societies.

Design and Technology

  • Select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks accurately.

Lesson Planning

Use your knowledge of Ancient Egyptian tombs to aid your construction of a model tomb; cut out card pieces to form the structure of an Ancient Egyptian tomb before scoring and folding the pieces of card to construct the tomb.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To use their knowledge of Ancient Egyptian tombs to aid their construction of a model tomb.
  • To begin the process of making an Egyptian Tomb.

Children will:

  • Gain an understanding of the structure of an Egyptian tomb.
  • Use a range of tools to cut out pieces of card accurately.
  • Score accurately along lines to create precise folds.
  • Create a 3D shape from several pieces of 2D card.
  • Understand how the perspective of the tomb is created in the model.

You Will Need

  • Create your own tomb booklet
  • A4 white card
  • Paperclips
  • Clothes pegs and/or bulldog clips
  • Biro
  • Nail or a pair of compasses
  • Ruler
  • Additional adult support if possible!

Session 2 Artwork

Objectives

History

  • Know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world: the nature of ancient civilisations.
  • Characteristic features of past non-European societies.

Art

  • Improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing with a range of materials.

Lesson Planning

Learn how figures were represented in Ancient Egyptian art; draw and paint figures in the Ancient Egyptian style.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To use their knowledge of Ancient Egyptian tombs and depiction of figures to aid their construction of a model tomb.
  • To understand how figures were represented in Ancient Egyptian art. Draw and paint figures in the Ancient Egyptian style.

Children will:

  • Describe the Ancient Egyptian style of depicting people.
  • Draw and colour figures in the Ancient Egyptian style.

Session 3 Assemble the tomb

Objectives

  • Apply their knowledge of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures.

Strengthen, stiffen and reinforce the complex structure of your tomb.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To use their knowledge of Ancient Egyptian tombs to aid their construction of a model tomb.
  • To construct the tomb from the decorated card pieces.

Session 4 Finishing touches

Objectives

  • Select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks, accurately.
  • Apply their knowledge of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures.
  • Evaluate their products.

Lesson Planning

Construct a 3D model staircase from 2D pieces of card and add finishing touches to your model tomb.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To use their knowledge of Ancient Egyptian tombs to aid their construction of a model tomb.
  • To make finishing touches to the model tomb.

Children will:

  • Construct a 3D model staircase from 2D pieces of card.
  • Add finishing touches to the tomb.
  • Use their knowledge of Ancient Egyptian tombs to add to their work.
