What would your ideal playground look like? Work together as a class to improve your playground; organise fundraising opportunities in school and celebrate your achievements.

Session 1 Recipe for a playground

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Express self effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs.
  • Count reliably with numbers from one to 20.
  • Use everyday language to talk about size.
  • Represent ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.

Lesson Planning

What are the ingredients to make an exciting playground? Decide on fundraising opportunities to improve an area in your playground.

Children will:

  • Use mathematical language to compare objects.
  • Express opinions about the school playground.
  • Design and make mini playgrounds using small world and natural materials.

  • Mixing bowl and spoon
  • Plastic flowers
  • iPads to film and photograph
  • Garden centre catalogues
  • Old receipts
  • Notepad
  • Pebbles/leaves/sticks/tray/soil/trowels/buckets/gardening gloves
  • Different seeds
  • Playdough and Lego
  • Small world figures
  • Maths games
  • Children’s superhero costume or mask to wear

Session 2 Playground problem solving

Objectives

Early learning goals

  • Count reliably with numbers from one to 20.
  • Solve problems.
  • Use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems.
  • Speak confidently in a familiar group, will talk about ideas, and will choose the resources are needed for the chosen activities.
  • Say when help is or isn't needed.

Lesson Planning

Have a go at playground problem solving by completing a series of maths challenges. Get ready for your fundraising event & carry out the fundraising day.

Children will:

  • Complete problem-solving activities.
  • Gain experience handling money.
  • Design and make small world playgrounds.
  • Carry out a fundraising event.

Session 3 Let's celebrate our achievements!

Objectives

  • Speak confidently in a familiar group, will talk about ideas, and will choose the resources needed for chosen activities.
  • Say when help is or isn't needed.
  • Use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems.

Lesson Planning

Hold a celebration for guests; take on different roles on the day. Tell the story behind the campaign & reveal the new area/equipment.

Children will:

  • Consolidate their learning in celebration to family and friends.
  • Participate in preparing the classroom & resources for the celebration.
