Learn about Viking traders, their routes, the items they traded and their markets by taking part in engaging classroom tasks such as a role-play trade game, a 'senses' art activity and a 'Viking Dragon’s Den' challenge.

Session 1 Why and where did the Vikings trade?

Objectives

History

  • Understand how knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.

  • To understand how groups of people live and work together.

Lesson Planning

Learn why and where the Vikings traded; explore the trading routes and then take part in a Viking trade game.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To understand the impact that trade had on people’s lives then and now.
  • To understand relationships within communities.

Children can:

  • Understand Viking trade as an important part of the way of life.
  • Appreciate that this produce can and is used today and the principle of trading is still relevant today.
  • Generate ideas that will improve the outcomes of the trade to make it more successful.

Session 2 Did the Vikings invent something that they could trade?

Objectives

  • To organise and adjust what they say, including the use of spoken language, to the needs of their listeners and any communication technology being used.

Computing

  • To design, and write programs that accomplish specific goals.

Investigate the items traded by the Vikings and take part in a ‘Viking Dragon’s Den’ scenario.

  • To investigate the importance of trade in the past and now.
  • To plan and give an effective presentation.

Children can:

  • Understand Viking trade as an important part of the way of life.

  • To record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
  • To improve their mastery of art and design techniques in painting.

Learn about Viking markets and create a vibrant ‘senses’ painting.

Teaching Outcomes:

  • To investigate importance of trade.
  • To understand the impact that trade had on people’s lives then and now.
  • To show empathy with this time.
  • To use artistic techniques to create an atmosphere.

Children can:

  • Show empathy with the Viking market place.
  • Create artwork that tries to show feelings through the media of paint.
  • Make constructive suggestions on the artwork of others.
